Although it was often called into question, it finally established itself under the Third Republic. It was written into the 1958 Constitution and is nowadays part of the French national heritage.
Race, Climate and Civilization in the Works of François Bernier - A now dominant paradigm identifies an important transformation in ethnological theories starting during the second half of the eighteenth century, by which naturalistic explanations of cultural differences became more racialized, with a shift from classical environmentalism to genealogical racism. This model however has been subject to some revision and criticism, often on the grounds that racism can be traced back to earlier sources and contexts. One of the texts that has been used to illustrate this early shift is the “Nouvelle division de la Terre” published by the philosophical traveller and libertine thinker François Bernier in 1684. What I propose here is to re-examine this text in the context of Bernier’s wider oeuvre, in particular his letters about his travels to India published in 1670-71, which include an influential analysis of the themes of oriental despotism and gentile superstition. I will propose that Bernier’s racial classification in his “Nouvelle division” was not, despite i
